Mexborough Lions - Serving the Community
The motto of Lions Clubs International is "We Serve" and this means responding to appeals for help from the community.
- We get appeals through Social Services, where they are unable to help but think help is needed.
- We get appeals through health visitors, through teachers, through neighbours. All appeals are treated in confidence, one reason why much of our work goes un-noticed and only appreciated by a few,
the ones helped.
- Other appeals are from community groups, themselves helping the community directly and often short on funds. Youth groups, Family centres, Aged retreats, we have been able to give assistance in
time or money to many.
- Our hospitals, our clinics and our schools have benefited from equipment purchased by Mexborough & District Lions
All this is made possible by the money you give, and we appreciate your trust that we will spend that money wisely for the good of the needy.
Spending YOUR donations
So how do we decide how to spend the money raised by our various efforts?
- We get a request for help - maybe from Social Services, the family doctor, neighbours, an article in the local press. A family in need, a hospital short of equipment, a school needing funds, a disabled or aged group looking for assistance
- We discuss it at our meeting. If we want more information we send members to get it. We discuss their findings and a member proposes a course of action.
- If a democratic majority of the club want to help, we help. No fixed guide-lines, no rule-book, just a gut feeling (from the heart, really) that the request is genuine and worthwhile.
Our members are from all walks of life, men and women, a mix of ages, representing YOU when we are asked to part with YOUR donations. That's OUR motto for YOU - "People - caring about people"
